Daniel French was born in Malta in 1908. The family emigrated to Toronto, Canada when he was a young child. French followed his brother Ralph to New York City in 1926 and got a job working for the Equitable Insurance Company. Frank Schonfeld (1916- ) was a member, rank and file activist, and officer of the Painters District Council 9 (New York City) and his home Local 1011 (now merged in Local 19). Sam Winn was born Samuel Winokur in rural western Ukraine in 1903. At the age of nine he moved with his family to the town of Lyubar (between Kiev and Lvov), where he received a rudimentary education.
